Building Community, One Thrift Find at a Time

The Rundown
This brand redesign was an educational project I completed during my studies at Algonquin College. The reSource thrift shop is a store I have frequently visited since living in Ottawa, and was a brand I felt I could help support with a redesign.
The reSource is a not-for-profit thrift shop, run by volunteers, with the mission to help the community with funds they raise through their thrift stores. The reSource focuses on creating a welcoming and clean second-hand shopping experience for its customers, while raising money for charitable causes.
Motivations
While the reSource is doing great work for the community, its branding, both in person and online, is quite out of date. Through a brand redesign, the not-for-profit can increase its recognizability and brand trust with customers.
Goals
- Increase brand awareness and memorablity
- Increase visitors and donation loyalty
- Develop modern web presence to increase customer trust
Responsibilities
As the sole designer of this project, I completed the project in its entirety on my own. Through market research, I developed a clear understanding of how the rebrand should come together. I then developed the new logo and look through rounds of sketches, finally pulling it all together with brand guidelines and applications for reSource to utilize in the future.

Project Outcome
The reSource’s passion for community was the core inspiration for the new logo design. The imperfect nature of the design has humility and an approachability in which the store itself is trying to build through their mission. The drawn strokes represent the people directly involved in making the shop what it is. The imagery used in the design plays into the idea of a resource (like the name), but more specifically one renewable resource: water. Just like the water cycle, this not-for-profit takes donations from the community and provides them with a second life, in which funds are then reinvested into the community, creating a cycle of community resources.
